Ciara Hovis, a PhD student studying with Jianguo “Jack” Liu, has been awarded the Vera M. Wallach Scholarship for Wildlife Ecology or Management of Wildlife, which supports graduate students studying wildlife management, wildlife ecology, or natural resource management.

Sweeping policies that reward people in environmentally sensitive areas for returning their farmlands to nature have been lauded as ecological triumphs. But a new Michigan State University study shows that over time some participants may become conservation martyrs.

Payments for ecosystem services (PES) programs have been global darlings for decades, tapping into the combined benefits of restoring forests and wildlife habitats, while also providing compensation to farmers and freeing them for new jobs that facilitate socio-economic development.

PhD student Andrew Carlson has been awarded the Robert C. Ball and Betty A. Ball Fisheries and Wildlife Fellowship, which recognizes students committed to studying fisheries, limnology or water quality.

Carlson, who is advised by Bill Taylor, will use the $5,000 award to support his fieldwork, research travel and other activities.
